Mountaineering vs Rock Climbing: Which Add-on Do I Need?

Both mountaineering and rock climbing are covered through Adventure Sports Optional Coverage, but each is a separate add-on. Pick the right one — or both — based on what your trip involves.

Mountaineering and rock climbing are both covered through TuGo's Adventure Sports Optional Coverage, but each is a separate add-on. Pick the right one based on what your trip involves.

What TuGo considers mountaineering

TuGo defines mountaineering as reaching mountain summits with the aid of specialized equipment, including but not limited to pickaxes, ice axes, anchors, bolts, crampons, carabiners, and anchoring gear for lead or top-rope climbing.

An activity is generally classified as mountaineering when:

  • The intent is to reach the summit of a mountain
  • You're likely to travel over snow or ice on the approach or climb
  • You need to carry ice tools, an ice axe, or crampons to navigate glaciated terrain

If your trip fits this profile, add the Mountaineering add-on.

What's classified as rock climbing

Rock climbing and bouldering — without the alpine elements above — are covered by the Rock Climbing add-on.

If your trip involves both

If your trip involves both mountaineering and rock climbing, add both options.
